Melvin Jones Lions Academy, named in honour of the founder of Lions Clubs International, forms the British Curriculum Wing of the larger complex of three sister schools sponsored by the Lions Club of Nakuru. It is a mixed day school established in 1991. The Academy had its humble beginnings within the premises of its sister school, Lions Primary. It shifted to its present location in January 1993 where it has steadily grown in size and numbers to become a centre of excellence in education. The school is run by the Lions Club of Nakuru Schools Management Board on behalf of its sponsors.
In line with the Lions’ motto “We Serve”, the school strives to cater for the ever increasing demand for quality education by the Nakuru community. The Academy is a stone throw away from the town centre, yet enjoys a tranquil atmosphere free of the distraction of every day town life, courtesy of its location within the quiet suburb of Section 58 estate.
MJLA is a Cambridge International Examinations School and Center keen in the holistic mentoring of its learners. It offers the internationally acclaimed British Primary (NCE), CIE Checkpoint [Lower Secondary], Ordinary Level International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (GCE) courses; all these in about 20 subjects. Each year has witnessed the posting of its candidates among the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards – Kenya.
Its population is pegged on a healthy teacher-learner ratio for purposes of good quality education. Currently it has about 415 pupils and students spread across the Curriculum Levels. It embraces strong educational principles while remaining open in its approaches. It starts with pupils aged five to six years who it places at the center of what the school greatly values and gradually builds the learners’ connection with the school and education in a compassionate environment. This inspires in learners the passion for their aspirations through a journey that stretches up to the 13th Grade, when they pass out as refined ladies and thorough gentlemen ready to face the world of Higher Learning and adulthood.
MJLA’s other strength lies in the prudent planning by the Management, the devotion by staff, supportive parents, an ever present culture of discipline and excellent educational facilities. With the right balance in the numbers involved, the school has a shared family bonding that enables it to prepare the learners.
The school enjoys ample games equipment, well stocked Computer laboratories with an elaborate LAN and fully connected to the internet, reading libraries, Science laboratories, well stocked Art and Music rooms, among numerous other provisions. In the safe environment of a CCTV surveillance and friendly surrounding, learners are encouraged to embrace excellence in their undertakings as a standard practice that is rewarding in its own right which is reinforced through various award schemes geared towards encouraging the learners’ all-round development.
